TORONTO - THE NORTH AMERICAN BULL'S-EYE

"Toronto is also superbly positioned as a point from which to export into the United States"

Canada is the second largest country in the world. On the atlas, it looks even larger due to the distortions of the Mercator projection in northern latitudes. But from a marketing perspective a very different picture emerges. Most of Canada’s population lives within 300 miles of the southern border with the United States. From a marketing point of view, Canada is a country 4,000 miles long and 300 miles wide. This geography makes it as easy for Canadian companies to sell into nearby American states as to distant parts of Canada.

Location of TorontoThe population of Canada is a little more than 30 million people. Some 18 million of these live in the central region, the 800 miles between Windsor, Ontario and Quebec City. This area is the economic power house of the whole country and Greater Toronto is the main engine within this power house.

Five million Canadians live within an hour’s drive of Toronto, and 60% of the population of the United States live within one hour’s flight time. Forty airlines connect Toronto to the rest of the world and half of the population of the United States is within one day’s trucking of Toronto – that is, more than 120 million of the wealthiest people on the planet.

Toronto itself is a prosperous and vibrant market to export to, or to establish a business in. It is also superbly positioned as a point from which to export into the United States. But, you may ask, why go to Toronto if you want to export to America? Why not go direct? One of many reasons is that a huge number of Toronto businesses export to the United States, and there is a corresponding base of people in the area who know how to enter the U.S. market as exporters. There are many other reasons as well, including low costs, low wage rates, a high standard of living, high educational standards, similar culture to the U.K. and government and legal systems based on the British systems.

Toronto is strong in many industrial sectors. Particular growth areas include computers, communications, software, food and drink processing, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, film and television production. Other strong areas include aerospace and automotive parts manufacture.

For the ideal trial market in North America, which becomes your launching pad for the whole continent, aim for the bull’s eye!
