Canada-Europe Trade Negotiations

Dear Friends and Clients,

Canada and the European Union are now nearing completion of CETA, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. This will be the most significant trade agreement signed by the federal government since NAFTA in 1994.

The agreement will eliminate most tariffs immediately or phase them out over a few years.

The majority of chapters in the agreement have already been finalized, and Canada and the EU are looking to bridge the gap on the handful of key differences that remain.

The ninth round of negotiations convened in Ottawa on October 17. Both sides are hoping to complete talks by early next year on an agreement that will give Canadian companies preferential access to a European Union market of 500 million consumers in 27 member states.

Before the round commenced, Steve Verheul, Canada's chief trade negotiator with the EU, said that the two parties are close to resolving most major issues and he hopes to finish negotiations by early next year.

"The political will to do so is very much there on both sides," he said.

The Economist: Schulich Business School is #1 in Canada

I was proud to hear that the Economist magazine has rated York University's Schulich Business School the top business school in Canada and 9th in the world.

The Financial Times has added to this by rating Schulich's EMBA program #1 in Canada for the fifth straight year and 11th globally.

I am particularly delighted in view of my role teaching a European Regional Analysis course as part of the School's International MBA program.

It was great last spring to see all the students from the course set off to take up their appointsments as interns, gaining practical business experience working in several different countries around Europe.
